The MLB Trade deadline has finally come to an end. Cliff Lee was traded to the Phillies, Jake Peavy to the White Sox, and Victor Martinez to the Red Sox, along with many others. Some trades will help, some won't. Here are some opinion thoughts on the trade deadline.
Best Trade: Cliff Lee to the Phillies
The Phillies were extremely interested in the Blue Jays Roy Halladay. That is why no one saw this coming. Last year's AL Cy Young winner was an excellent pickup for the Phillies. Cole Hamels has not had a great year, and they did exactly what they needed to do: add an ace to their rotation.
Worst Trade: Mariners Trading away Jarrod Washburn
Washburn had a solid 2.64 ERA before the Mariners shipped him to Detroit. That is a good addition for Detroit, but a bad addition for the Mariners, who needed him if they wanted to get back in the AL West race.
Best Trade for a contending team: Matt Holliday to the Cardinals
A great addition for Tony La Rusa's squad. In the first 10 games as a Cardinal, Matt Holliday has 3 HRs and 10 RBIs. He's finally playing like he did when he was in Colorado. He could be a difference maker for the Cardinals if they want to make the playoffs.
Notable: Freddy Sanchez to the Giants - who knew the Giants would be contending. Now that they pick up the 3-time All star, maybe they can win the NL Wild Card. Also a great addition.
Most Random Trade: George Sherrill to the Dodgers
The Dodgers went out and got another reliever. Sherrill, a 2008 All Star in Baltimore, had 20 saves and a 2.32 ERA up until the trade. A completely random trade for the Dodgers in my opinion, but a very good pick up as well. He can definitely contribute in the Dodgers bullpen down the stretch.
