An average baseball game usually lasts about three hours. A game that goes into extra innings may last four. But when a game goes for six hours and 53 minutes, you know it must be a good one. When I saw the game was in the 16th inning and still tied, I was amazed. The surprising thing was that the Mets and the Cardinals were tied at zero! It took 18 innings and over six hours for Jeff Francoeur to hit a sacrifice fly to break the 0-0 score. In the bottom of the 19th, just one out away from going home, Yadier Molina drove Albert Pujols in to send the game into the 20th, where Jose Reyes' sacrifice fly was enough to seal the deal. Let me put it this way: the losing pitcher was a center fielder, and starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey got the save. A center fielder. The game consisted of 19 pitchers and Francisco Rodriguez started warming up in the eighth inning, even though he pitched 11 innings later.
What a game. I just want to point out the fact that Yadier Molina caught all 20 innings. That is something most of you probably don't realize when you think of this game. Catching is arguably the most tiring position in all of baseball, and to catch for over two games in a row is something I can't imagine doing. I would assume Molina will have the night off. Overall, both teams played defense and pitched incredibly well. The game ended with just 23 total hits and two errors. Pelfrey had pitched seven scoreless innings against the Rockies just two days earlier. I don't think anybody would have thought that he would have to pitch in a game that Johan Santana had pitched seven terrific innings. I wasn't able to watch any of the game, but I was constantly checking ESPN to see when this game would end. All I can say is that it was great for the first month of the MLB season to have such an exciting game like this.
