Walking Off...To the Hospital

I've been very busy recently, and I also haven't found many topics that I wanted to talk about. But Angels first basemen Kendry Morales breaking his leg after his walk-off grand slam on Saturday was appealing to me and I feel like it's appealing to others too. The Mariners were up 1-0 until a game-tying solo home run by right fielder Bobby Abreu in the bottom of the 8th. The game went into extras, and Morales hit his shot off Brandon League in the bottom of the 10th. Morales got to the plate and when he jumped, he landed awkwardly on his lower left leg.

This unfortunate event is bad Angels fans across the country, but it's also negative for me too. First, his home run was against the Mariners. My favorite team has not played well this year (especially Ken Griffey Jr.: .186 BA, 0 HRs and 7 RBIs) as they are rocking last place in the American League West by 5.5 games at 19-30. Cliff Lee is not playing as well as they had hoped with a 3.22 ERA and a record of 3-2. They've got to start hitting soon or else they'll fall behind for good.

Second, he's on my fantasy team. I was thrilled when I heard that he had hit a walk-off grand slam, but my emotions changed when I heard what happened when he reached home plate. He's putting up very solid numbers, leading the Angels in home runs (11), batting average (.290) and RBIs (39), and is second on the team with 29 runs. They need him if they want to contend in the AL West, but it seems like he is going to miss a large portion of the season. The '09 All Star was supposed to have surgery on his left leg today, but it was postponed because they're going to reevaluate him. The fact of the matter is that it's a brutal loss for the 3-time defending AL West champions, and someone will have to step up their play to make up for the loss of Morales.
