Atlanta for 20 years. Boston for 8 months. Now? John Smoltz is a St. Louis Cardinal. After a 2-5 record and an 8.32 ERA (the highest of his career), the Red Sox released him. Smoltz just wasn't the same as he has been for the last 15 years or so. He is on pace to have the worst ERA of his career, and his first year with an ERA of over 4.00 since 1994. Maybe Boston wasn't a good fit. St. Louis is in the National League, like the Braves, and I think that he will play better in the NL again. St. Louis is warmer than Boston, so I think the weather may affect his play as well. John Smoltz is 68-40 against the NL Central in his career, including a 15-5 record against the Cubs, who are 2nd in the NL Central. Also, he has a 2.86 ERA in 46 games against the Dodgers, the best team by record in the National League. Besides, at 42, the Cardinals are obviously not expecting him to come in and take Chris Carpenter's spot as first in the rotation, they just need him to pitch solidly as the fifth man in the rotation. I think that, as the fifth man, he can pitch better than he has so far this year and help them down the stretch and in the playoffs.
