The Worse, the Bad and the Ugly

This weekend was a very eventful one for the NFL: Brett Favre returned to Green Bay in an away uniform, the Titans won their first game and the Broncos lost their first game. But a somewhat humorous game was between a team that was on a 17-game losing streak and the team that lost all 16 games last year. Yes, I am talking about the Rams vs. the Lions. Who did I think would win? I thought Detroit. I'm going to be flat-out honest: I thought the Rams would lose every game this season, like Detroit did last year. Then when I heard Calvin Johnson wasn't playing I started worrying about my prediction, and sure enough, the Rams won. I laughed when I saw the score said 3-2 in the second quarter, and it seemed fitting for there to be a score like that in a matchup between teams like these two. Let's wrap up the points scored in this game: a field goal, a safety, a fake-field-goal touchdown pass, a 4-yard rushing touchdown by a quarterback who had just 213 rushing yards in 39 collegiate games, and a rushing touchdown by the best player in this matchup. I personal think and thought that Matt Stafford would not have a stellar rookie season, but this would be his chance to shine. You can tell how much he wanted his top receiver out there: Stafford completed just 42% of his passes and threw for 168 yards and an interception. The teams were a combined nine for twenty-eight on 3rd down and had one score in five red zone opportunities. The defenses weren't good either: just two total sacks and one turnover forced apiece. There really weren't any strong points to this game except Rams RB Steven Jackson had a great game (which was expected considering the Lions allow 6.2 yards per carry, a league worst) and the Rams are no longer winless. They have two weeks to enjoy the win: after their bye week, they play the currently unbeaten New Orleans Saints.
