And NFL Free Agency is underway. In not even 24 hours, many big-name players have already signed and re-signed with teams. The Bears have already signed three players that can help their squad. The Jets made a key trade with the Chargers to make their secondary even better. Also, many key free agents such as Karlos Dansby and Brandon Marshall have scheduled meetings with teams. We are not far into free agency at all, and all of these big name players will land somewhere. Here are a few players who signed so far that I think can make an impact on their teams:
Julius Peppers (and Chester Taylor) - Chicago Bears
The Bears signed the best free agent available and a running back who can fill in for Matt Forte if he is injured. Peppers has had 10+ sacks in five of the last six seasons and tied a career high with five forced fumbles. Signing Peppers was definitely a move the Bears had to make considering the fact that they don't have any early draft picks because of the Jay Cutler trade. Chester Taylor is definitely capable of being a starting running back. Remember, Taylor is just a few years removed from a 1200-yard season. He makes Chicago very solid in the backfield.
Gary Brackett - Indianapolis Colts
The Colts signed Brackett to a five-year, $33 million deal, and I think the deal is definitely worth it. Brackett has been a key part of the Colts' defense the last 5 years, racking up 99 or more tackles each year. Keeping Brackett allows them to keep a leader of their defense and at age 29, he should contribute to the Colts defense yet again in pursuit of another Super Bowl title.
Dunta Robinson - Atlanta Falcons
Robinson has been regarded as the best free agent cornerback in the league. The Falcons are a team that has a lot of talent on offense, but lacked that explosiveness on the other side of the ball. Adding a defensive threat is exactly what the 28th ranked pass defense needed. The Falcons were in desperate need of a cornerback, and this move definitely puts Atlanta in a better position.
Antonio Cromartie - New York Jets
There had been talk for while that Cromartie was on the trading block. Now that the Jets have made a move, their defense will be one of the scariest in the league. Cromartie brings 15 career interecption to a defense that already has one of the best corners in the league, Darrelle Revis. Having Revis and Cromartie in the secondary is going to be a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. Maybe this can help the Jets get back to the AFC Championship game.
Josh Cribbs - Cleveland Browns
Cribbs has eight career return touchdowns in his five years for Cleveland, and they absolutely made the right decision to keep him. Cribbs was used as a running towards the end of the season and he averaged 6.9 yards per career in 2009. He made his second Pro Bowl in '09, and he will continue to be a threat for the Browns in 2010.
