After a long, long week, I am back. My last post did not go so well: I incorrectly picked the Super Bowl. Hopefully today I can get a few right, and I will have four different opportunities. NBA All Star Weekend is underway, and last night's Rookie Challenge and Celebrity Game were exciting for everyone who was watching. The Rookies won the game for the first time since 2002 while Kings guard Tyreke Evans won game MVP. Today is sure to be just as exciting as yesterday. I picked Kevin Durant to defend his title in the H.O.R.S.E. competition, and he is leading right now, but many people probably picked him as the favorite. As for the other four events in All Star Saturday Night in Dallas, here are my picks:
Haier Shooting Stars - Team Atlanta
Team Atlanta consists of 2010 All Star Joe Johnson, 2009 WNBA Rookie of the Year Angel McCoughtry and NBA Analyst Steve Smith. You can never really know who's going to win this event: it's all about who can hit the half-court shot first. I just think Team Atlanta may be the ones to get it the quickest.
Taco Bell Skills Challenge - Deron Williams
I like Williams in this event because he's won it before, and I've seen it in person. Williams beat Chris Paul in the 2008 Skills Challenge during the All Star Weekend in New Orleans, and I was lucky enough to actually be there. Two years ago, I really thought he had a good shot at being great when he won the award, and now he is an NBA All Star. Williams is one of the up-and-coming NBA players, and I think he'll take home to trophy today for the second time.
Footlocker 3-Point Contest - Chauncey Billups
Chauncey Billups has been known as a great play-maker and three-point shooter his entire career, shooting over 40% from down town in five of his last six seasons. Billups is actually averaging a career high in points per game at 19.5, so at age 33 he is still having one of his best seasons. I like Billups in this one, with Stephen Curry closely behind him.
Sprite Slam Dunk Competition - Gerald Wallace
Gerald Wallace is another great young player in the NBA. Wallace made his first career All Star team this year, and he has been a fantastic high-flyer throughout his career. I think Wallace will beat dunk-in winner Demar Derozan in the finals.
